Resources for Homeschoolers

One of the challenges and advantages of homeschooling is that you and your child are required to learn about all the resources out there. In public and private schools, resources are packaged and handed to you, which is a wonderful service, but it can leave you isolated in terms of knowing what’s out there and how to find it.  Homeschooling is as much of an education for the parent as it is for the child!  With a little resourcefulness, you’ll find that there is a wealth of untapped resources out there for your family.

Of course, the internet is the top of your list. But, your local library is still the old stand-by that hasn’t been completely replaced by the internet.  Libraries offer hands-on experience that is so important for young minds.  There are often live events for children like story-telling and classes on how to find books. The foundation we have in the tangible world is still so much of how we conceptualize the organization of the internet.

There are also books on tape and collections of music that might not be your first thought about libraries.  These sections are out of the way of the children’s section, so you might not think of it, but most libraries will have a plethora of children’s books on tape. This can be a great comfort to children who love to be read to, or who want to read along.  You can also look for free kids music at the library.  There are plenty of sources of music on the internet, but being able to learn how cd players work, and borrow music without having to pay even a dollar, and being able to look at the covers and the credits, can be a whole education in itself.

If your child has an interest in music, you might look online or ask the librarian to see if there are any Children’s Music Festivals in your area.  These can be wonderful experiences with lots of performers playing free kids music that is live, and where your kids can actually talk to the performers!
